Once again in dazzling form against PSG on Tuesday in the Champions League, Luis Díaz is enjoying a superb first season at Bayern Munich. This is sure to leave a sense of regret in England, where his departure from Liverpool remains a mystery.

Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg between PSG and Bayern Munich (5-4) provided an exceptional spectacle for football fans. In a match where total football seemed to be reborn for a single evening, the strikers from both teams particularly stood out.

Liverpool’s decision was not understood

Among them, Luis Diaz stole the show. Highly incisive in Bayern’s attacks and technically precise, the Colombian made the difference on numerous occasions, winning the penalty converted by Harry Kane and scoring a superb goal. A performance that has not gone unnoticed in England, where some observers still struggle to understand how Liverpool could have let such a player go.

Last summer, the Merseyside club agreed to sell their winger to Bayern for €75 million. “Luis Díaz was never the ideal player to sell last summer, and I still struggle to understand it,” admitted former Reds defender Jamie Carragher on CBS. ‘Finding a reason to let him go is a real head-scratcher. Players like him are difficult to replace or find on the transfer market. You never tire of watching 90 minutes of football with Diaz on the pitch.’

Liverpool have ‘lost a gem’

With hindsight, Liverpool may have some regrets about how they handled the Luis Diaz situation. The 29-year-old was seeking a pay rise, which was refused by the Reds, who preferred to secure Mohamed Salah and back Cody Gakpo, whose contract was extended until 2031 last August. ‘I can’t believe it. Are you telling me they sold Luis Diaz to keep Gakpo? Frankly, it’s not just a bad footballing decision, it’s a disastrous one,” said Micah Richards, a consultant for CBS.

The former Manchester City defender made no secret of his admiration for the Colombian winger: “This guy is a game-changer! He brings pure chaos, incredible energy, speed, power and moments of pure magic. Liverpool haven’t just lost a player, they’ve lost a gem.” A view shared by Steven Gerrard, another iconic figure at the Reds, who recently stated: “I wouldn’t be against Diaz coming back. We miss him.”

Kahn praises Bayern

Over at Bayern, they are obviously relishing this fine signing. Former Bayern goalkeeper and club director Oliver Kahn believes that signing Luis Diaz “was the right choice” for the Rekordmeister. “He is currently one of the best left wingers in Europe,” he said on Sky Germany. “He has proven that throughout the season, even at 29. He excels at beating defenders, creating chances and scoring goals. He has significantly improved our team. His enormous influence and that typically Colombian fighting spirit, that never-say-die attitude, have been key elements of our success.” There is no doubt that the South American will once again be one of the main threats to PSG in the second leg next Wednesday in Munich.
